Recaps His Team's Second Place In SRPll

Andy Hartwell found Dennis Spencer Feeling pleased with his Rolex 24, but perhaps a little humble....

"We did well in handling all the wrinkles that got in the way. On two occasions we broke the number three header and had a small fire. The first one we replaced in 38 minutes and the second in about 25 minutes. Pretty good when you figure that everything that your are working on is red hot.

"Ever see the pipe on a Mazda glow in the dark? What a great crew!

"One of the amazing things about this race is that every time that one of those German door slammers went out of the race, two more seemed to take their place. They sure have a short gestation period is all I can figure out.

"I really blew the whole thing and cost us about 50 laps by going off the track on slicks when the rain started up again. A slight tap from one of those other cars (prior to the entry to turn one) gave me a good start over the grass and across turn six. I feel sorry for the bunch of guys who saw this projectile hurling across the grass and headed their way. I feel bad that someone was tagged by me on my way across the asphalt at six.

"When you come to think of it, that is a long way to go for the lap not to count!

"One thing we did as a team is that we ran the race from that point on as if it was a sprint. We put as many laps on the Lola as we could. You've got to admit that we turned some mighty fine times to undo as many laps as we did. Wish more people were made aware of it on TV!

"We hope next year that the team owner practices what he preaches. I did not need to make the pass at turn one in the braking zone. Never should have at that point in the race. Some people say that is just racing. I say that is just stupid and embarrassing.”
