On The Starting Grid

The crowds were milling about the grid prior to the start with everyone trying to get a picture of Paul Newman or Dale Earnhardt. At the mid-section of the grid, the RWS Red Bull / KTM Porsche crew were taking it all in and, while awaiting the order to clear the grid, they found time to be the star subjects of the photo below.

The Race – First Report

Things got underway well for the Red Bull team. Luca Riccitelli took the car out first. By the end of the first hour the car was through 29 laps and held third position.

Dieter Quester took the next shift but through an internal mass error on his part, he was forced to hustle himself into the seat, losing valuable time. Given the impact he knew would result, Dieter set out to reclaim those precious seconds by wheeling away quickly. On cold tires. On a wet track.

Once he had the first spin out of the way, it was time for the second. Getting the car back under his control, he ran his stint and by the end of the second hour, the car was placed 8th. This had everyone watching the monitors for lap times and progress moving forward.

Hans-Jorg Hofer gives this account of the action through about 4.5 hours of the race:
“We lost almost a minute to the terrible pit stop. Dieter is usually always ready but he wasn’t this time. I guess he got mad at himself and that is why he spun.

“After a few laps we have a problem with oversteering. And Marc (in the car now) tells us there is oil on the windshield and the wiper arm is lifting. But anyway, he is running 2:12 and the fastest is Lucas Luhr. It is a long race.”
